The repertoire of the theater mainly consists of world classics. It also hosts concerts of guests of the capital, foreign performances, theater festivals, including solo and national performances. The Alisher Navoi Academic Theater is the largest theater in Southeast Asia. Its history dates back to 1929, when lovers of the concert and ethnographic ensemble, under the leadership of M. Kari-Yakubov, organized a professional theater. In 1939, it was renamed the State Uzbek Opera and Ballet Theater, and in March 1948, united with the Russian Theater, it was named the Alisher Navoi State Opera and Ballet Theater. For the successful development of the art of opera and ballet in 1959, the theater was given academic status, and in 1966 - the Bolshoi Theater. The theater building is an architectural monument of the mid-20th century, its courtyard demonstrates the beautiful world of national folk art. The author of the building design was Academician Alexei Shusev, he also built a mausoleum on Red Square in Moscow. The construction of the theater began in 1939. In 1942 it was suspended due to the difficulties of wartime, but in 1944 construction was resumed. In November 1945, Japanese prisoners of war from the Quantung Army were transferred to Tashkent. They finished building the structure.
