Alay Bazaar, also known as Oloy Bozori in Uzbek, is one of the oldest and most popular markets in Tashkent city. It is mainly a food market selling spices, fresh and dried fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and other products.
There is also an indoor section at the front of the bazaar with various shops including those selling gold and silver jewellery.
It is said that the name of the bazaar comes from the local mountain Oloy, located on the Great Silk Road, which runs from Eastern Turkestan through the Fergana Valley.
Another theory suggests that the name comes from the Turkic word "Alai," meaning "soldier," as the market was once near soldiers' settlements and primarily traded items needed by soldiers.
