Mirabad Bazaar, Tashkent

A Brief History

Mirabad Bazaar, also known as Hospital Market, is a lively hub of commerce and culture. The bazaar’s unique name harks back to the mid-19th century when a military hospital was established on its grounds.

The market began as a small trading area adjacent to the hospital, where local farmers and traders sold food, sweets, and other goods to soldiers and hospital visitors. Over time, the bazaar expanded and became a bustling center for trade, gaining the affectionate nickname "Hospitalka" from locals.

The modern structure of Mirabad Bazaar was constructed between 1995 and 1996, featuring a large canopy and high gates with the inscription "Mirobod Dehqon Bozori." The construction employed a unique technique for the region: the roof frame was assembled on the ground and then lifted into place.

Despite losing its iconic turquoise roof during a restoration in 2016, the bazaar remains a significant landmark, easily recognizable by its large canopy and the vibrant activity within.

What to Buy at Mirabad Bazaar

Agricultural products are the star of Mirabad Bazaar. The market is famed for its fresh fruits and vegetables, which are replenished daily. Shoppers can find aromatic tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, flavorful onions, and a variety of potatoes and carrots, including the yellow variety used in traditional Uzbek pilaf.

The bazaar is also a treasure trove of herbs and spices, including saffron, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves, and more. Herbs are sold in generous bunches, adding a fresh aroma to the bustling market atmosphere.

There's plenty for fruit lovers too. Juicy apples, sweet grapes, ripe bananas, and an assortment of peaches and figs are displayed in abundance. Watermelons, often sold from two-wheeled carts, are a popular choice, especially during the hot summer months.

No visit to Mirabad Bazaar is complete without sampling the traditional Uzbek flatbreads. These freshly baked delights are known for their crispy crusts, soft interiors, and a sprinkling of sesame seeds.

The bazaar also caters to fans of Korean cuisine, offering essential ingredients and ready-made salads and appetizers.
